Our economic and social progress has been accompanied by environmental degradation, endangering the very systems on which all life on earth depends.
Global warming is impacting all natural habitats and communities, especially people of color, low-income, children, and the elderly. This communities are those who are least able to prepare for, and recover from, heat waves, droughts, poor air quality, flooding, and other extreme events.
.... Why these matters ....
Nearly 50% of Latinos in the U.S. live in the most polluted counties, with increase levels of asthma and other respiratory illnesses.
Black and African American individuals are 40% more likely to currently live-in areas with the highest projected increases in extreme temperature-related deaths.
Low-income individuals are 25% more likely than non-low-income individuals to currently live-in areas with the highest projected losses of labor hours due to global warming.
More than half (55%) of Latinos live in the three states that are already experiencing serious effects related to global warming: wildfires in California, record-breaking heat in Arizona, and increased flooding in Florida.
This Giving Tuesday, you can join us on building community power to act on climate and protect our natural environments so they can continue to be a source of life and livelihood for all communities. This is how we are doing it!
